We’re less than a week away from the next Waterparks album titled JINX set to release this Friday, July 24th. The Houston-based band released one more single out of the five already released titled ‘BETTER THAN THERAPY’, as well as teasing the opening track to the album titled ‘TELL ME WHY’, featuring a plethora of artists such as Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and band Sorry My Love. But in today’s edition of our Star Radar, we’re going to tell you why ‘BETTER THAN THERAPY’ is, well, better than therapy.
‘BETTER THAN THERAPY’ was first debuted at DC’s day one of Vans Warped Tour, with videos of the performance quickly circulating online. Fans everywhere were excited over the possibility of a new song, and the band themselves started teasing the next single on social media soon after their DC run at the summer music festival with unique videos. One of the biggest highlights of this album cycle is how creative Waterparks have gotten with their promotion videos. From funny skits, to Awsten getting a caricature done of him on the beach which you can now enter to win, their marketing has been nothing short of impressive and unique.
‘BETTER THAN THERAPY’ was officially released on June 26th, and was a collaborative writing and composition effort of Awsten Knight himself, the well-known Zakk Cervini, and Patent Pending’s very own Joe Ragosta. We all have that something in our lives that we can describe as being “better than therapy”, and that’s how we describe this song and Waterparks. While ‘BETTER THAN THERAPY’ offers a catchy tune, it also offers unique lyrics and creative word play. The newest Waterparks single describes a relationship as being something that’s “better than therapy”. We all know how painstakingly boring being in a waiting room can be, and that’s how waiting on a relationship can feel. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting, for what can seem like hours, months, years, even. But, maybe there’s that person who doesn’t make you wait. They chose you amongst all the others almost instantly; You don’t got a waiting room // Where I sit there with other dudes // Waiting for my turn to get to you. And maybe, they don’t rush you through anything either. You take your time through the relationship. They don’t just throw you away instantly without giving yourselves a chance; You don’t check the clock // Or interrupt me when we talk // To say ‘that’s all the time we’ve got’ // I like that too. The chorus makes numerous references to mental health, such as panicking. It’s almost endearing in a way. They aren’t the only one who can feel this way, and you understand it; you can be just as manic as them, or panic just the same; Just don’t be fucking mad at me // When I act out dramatically // ‘Cause even when you panic // I’ll be just as manic // Crash and burn our way together to the bottom. The second chorus begins with even more word play, relating counseling and therapy to a relationship; You could call it alchemy // Or call it couple’s counseling. Other than relating and comparing a relationship to mental health and therapy, Waterparks describe a relationship that is deemed so good, it’s almost like worshiping or praying to something…something Satanic, even; Draw you like Titanic // Worship you Satanic. Oh, and we love a good “draw me like one of your French girls” Titanic movie reference. Nice.
Waterparks never fail to amaze us here at Don’t Stop Alt throughout our almost eight years of listening. With JINX literally around the corner, Waterparks have a few events coming up to celebrate.
