The iconic, Los Angeles-based “bee band” is keeping fans in anticipation with their second studio album Loving and Losing set to release September 18th, but not without yet another surprise single titled ‘Trust Issues’ released just over a week ago on August 21st. With a song that holds a profound number of emotions that tugs at the heartstrings, ‘Trust Issues’ is a song that communicates what it’s like to feel lost in yourself.
Honey Revenge releases music that feels like you’re being directly spoken to. From ‘Are You Impressed?’ where the song communicates feelings of not being enough and the fight to remain true to yourself in a sea of people who want something different, to ‘Hot Commodity’, a song that encourages the listener to remain unique, always trust that singer Devin Papadol and guitarist Donny Lloyd will have your back and provide you a song that hits in all the right places. ‘Trust Issues’ is no different, and we’re loving it!
When speaking about the band’s newest single that is one of their most emotionally complex by far within the series of releases for the album, Devin describes the song as something deeply personal to herself specifically. “To keep it short,” the singer says in an Instagram caption regarding ‘Trust Issues’, “I struggled to feel good about my writing at the beginning of this album process. I didn’t know if I’d ever make a song I loved again and couldn’t trust my judgement for the life of me. This track is all about trying to identify that doubt and understand my waning confidence.”
Similar to the name, ‘Trust Issues’ communicates feelings of self-doubt one might have within themselves. The chorus I can’t trust myself to tie my shoes // Oh, I think so much, I get confused // Misunderstood and misconstrued, uses a simple action such as tying your shoes to display how one might have doubt in their own mind concerning themselves no matter the situation. This can additionally bring conflicting emotions, Can’t seem to make decisions, I need to see a shrink // I’ve got tunnel vision until I blink // They say I’ve got ambition, I don’t know what I think.
Another quality that sticks out in this synth-heavy, 80’s-vibe track, is the heavy usage in visuals that deepens each line and displays the fantastic songwriting for this track. Mood swing, seesaw // Re-occurring free fall, compares conflicting emotions with drifting back and forth like a seesaw, or constantly falling from a ledge over and over. Whiplash, seasick // Caught up in the current, additionally adds to the heavy use in visuals, utilizing instances like whiplash and being seasick as a way to describe feeling “caught in the current”, or being pulled in different directions and questioning yourself the entire time. Lastly, Am I ruined? Am I burnt beyond repair? // If only I could brush the troubles from my hair, is another nice touch of using visuals such as brushing your hair in hopes to simply get rid of any lingering concerns.
It goes without saying that Honey Revenge has done it again with yet another beautiful single in anticipation for their sophomore album. To say that we’re excited is an understatement, and we’re looking forward to hearing the rest of Loving and Losing. “Sometimes you forget how to trust yourself and lose sight of what’s important and that’s ok!” Honey Revenge says in an Instagram caption. “We always make our way back to where we need to be.”
